RAILCARS

A few railcars have survived into preservation in Tasmania and several have ended up in other states. Here I have grouped together a few recent railcar photos along with existing pictures from other pages on this site.

DP14

DP14 & DP13 at the Transport Museum, Glenorchy, 17 June 2001. DP13 remained with Australian National after their takeover of the Tasmanian railway system and was used as an inspection car and for promotional purposes. It was sold after privatisation, and restored and repainted into this new colour scheme. DP13 and 14 were built in 1939 in NSW by Waddingtons and are powered by a 102 hp Gardner diesel.

DP26

DP 26 at the Transport Museum, Glenorchy, 17 June 2001. This railcar is different in that it is articulated, in a similar fashion to the ACS passenger carriages used on the Tasman Limited until its demise in 1978 as Tasmanias last scheduled passenger train. This railcar, along with the five other members of the class were built in 1949-50 at Commonwealth Engineering in NSW. The Gardner engines in these were 153 hp.

DP26

DP26. The tourist bus on the road in the background has been made up to look like one of Hobarts trams, which ran in the city until closure in 1960. Several real Hobart trams are displayed in the museum.

DP13

 DP13

DP13 and DP14 emerging from Rhyndaston tunnel on their way to the Don River Railway on 24 June 2001. These railcars may be purchased by the Burnie City Council for tourist promotion purposes. The blanked out middle windscreen is a trick of the light.

DP13 at Big Creek

Don River Railcar

Dec 28 2000, after arriving from Devonport with tourists.

DP22 is powered by a 153 hp Gardner engine and with the four other members of this class were built in 1944 by Waddingtons. They were used over most of the railways in Tasmania, and finished their service life in use on the Hobart suburban system. DP22 is now used most days at the Don River Railway, but since its latest overhaul and privatisation it gets out on mainline runs quite often.

DPs at Queenscliff

Two more DP articulated railcars are at the Bellarine Peninsular Railway, Queenscliff.

DPs at Queenscliff

The DPs in company with ex Tasmania "camel" car at Queenscliff. These cars were built by Sentinel, Cammell, England and were originally steam powered railcars, later having their boilers and engines removed and used as loco hauled stock. For more pictures of these Sentinel cars click here.
