Alcos imported from Australian National's South Australian system led the changeover to air braking
in Tasmania, and were the first American diesel locomotives in the
state. Most were sent back to S A after the arrival of the 45 members of the
ZC (Qld 1300) class, one
remains, No. 866 preserved at the Don River Railway at Don.
In 1988 the Don River Railways' MA2 became the first steam loco to run on the Bell Bay line. In the lower photo the engine is completing a run by on the Longreach spur line, and in the top photo another run past near the top of the grade out of the Bell Bay port facilities
