EMU BAY RAILWAY (MELBA LINE)

While there is usually snow on Tasmania's mountains during the winter, there are only a few days each year that the snow lays on the ground at lower altitudes. The Melba Line between Hampshire and the Que River is above 1500ft. (456 metres) and snow can be a problem. I managed to catch a DQ hauled train in the snow country on 19 Sep 2002.

2008

Snow was about a metre deep here at sunrise, but by 1200 hrs it was melting rapidly. Train 72 with 2008, 2056 & 2005 is approaching Guildford.

Passing the old unloading ramp, one of the few signs left of this once busy station.

Some pics from last year:

Train 81 Burnie to Hampshire log siding has 16 wagons of logs to haul to the woodchip mill 21st August,2001. This train no longer runs.

There are not too many opportunities to photograph English Electrics in the snow in Tasmania.

The train will arrive at the chip mill well before the log trucks on the adjacent highway, as the road is closed to all but four wheel drives.

Highway crossing near Highclere, a grader was in the process of clearing the road.

August 22, train 77 Burnie - Melba Flats is approaching the 42 km mark.

Train 77

Just moments before this pic was taken, it was snowing here.
