RAILTON PAGE , Featuring DV1
15 October 2001. DV1, the new end of train unit for the eastern end of the Railton cement shuttle train is approaching the Railton yard having led the empty train from Devonport. DV1 has been built from the shell of English Electric Tasmanian built Y class locomotive Y7. Eight of the Y class were built in the TGR workshops at Launceston.

This is Y7 as it looked on 2 October 1998, outside the Tasrail workshop at East Tamar.
As can be seen, Y7 received new windows, new headlights etc that have completely changed it's looks. It has a small diesel motor fitted to run the lights, and the operator uses the remote control unit to operate the DQ loco at the rear of the train. This configuration will enable the cement train to run as a driver only unit, and obviates the need to shunt the train at Railton and Devonport.
On the rear today the first of the DQ class no. 2001 is doing the pushing.
This is the complete train entering the Goliath Cement siding for loading.
19 November 2001. DC4588 on the cement train (see also pic at Devonport ) This proved to be short lived as the unit has since returned to Launceston.
Note the remote control equipment boxes on a special mount on the running boards. Compare this to the pic of 2009 down the page
On the rear on the loaded run to Devonport, DV1 is now gaining a good cover of cement dust.
Parked under the new pedestrian overpass near the silos at Devonport, DV1 shows off its cement coating, 14th August 2002.
Nearing Devonport, the cement train is climbing out of Horsehead creek.
