D CLASS ON TEST

All pics taken 24 July 2001

After arriving in Tasmania on June 15 the new D class locos were not expected to enter service for some time as traction motors from English Electric ZB class bogies had still to be fitted to them. But suprisingly they were out being tested on July 10, just over three weeks later. On Monday 23 July they hauled the Paper Train from Western Junction south to Boyer and return, and on Tuesday 24 July were supposed to do the same. However they were not ready in time and were forced to follow the train south light engine. I managed to catch the Ds at Western Junction and it was possible to hear the sound of just one V16 GM as it headed south.
