DC4588 was used for a few days in October as the middle unit with DQs 2003 & 2009 on trains 35/36. On the 17 Oct 2002 however 4588 was in the lead on a very long (54 wagons) and late running train 36 that did not arrive in Burnie until midday, about 4 hours late. (see pictures of this train at the botttom of this page) After further trouble with the engines at Burnie the cement train loco and driving van DV1 were sent down from Devonport to assist train 35. I can only wonder why the DV1 went too, perhaps it was going to lead on the return trip! In the end, DC4588 was turned on the Y at Burnie and led the train at least as far as Western Junction. We have some exclusive photos, taken by John and Susan Robertson who saw the train as it passed their house at Ulverstone, and followed it to the Don Hill.

The nearly 1km long train stretched from here up to the Picnic Point Corner, in the far distance.

4588, turned at Burnie, is once again in the lead of train 35 as it passes through Leith.

DV1 is definitely out of place on this train.

Earlier in the day 4588 with a broken coupler is seen heading the other way just to the west of Penguin. and train 36 is late. 4588 has been moved to lead the consist, all three engines are running but the train has stopped several times with some problem.
